Support that respects the whole person

Autism is not something that needs to be erased or corrected. Autistic people may experience the world, communicate, process emotions, and respond to their surroundings in ways that differ from non-autistic people.

Our therapists provide autism-informed mental health counseling focused on emotional well-being, self-understanding, relationships, communication, and daily life. Therapy is personalized around each client’s strengths, needs, preferences, and goals.

Our goal is not to make someone appear less autistic. Our goal is to help clients feel understood, communicate their needs, manage distress, strengthen relationships, and build practical tools that support their quality of life.

What autism-informed therapy can address

Autistic clients may seek counseling for many of the same reasons anyone else does. Therapy may help with concerns such as:

  • Anxiety, persistent worry, panic, or fear of unfamiliar situations
  • Depression, low self-esteem, isolation, or loss of motivation
  • Emotional regulation, intense distress, shutdowns, or recovery after overwhelming experiences
  • Sensory overwhelm and the emotional effects of noise, light, touch, crowds, textures, or unexpected changes
  • Recognizing, communicating, and advocating for personal needs
  • Friendship, dating, family, school, workplace, or relationship challenges
  • Masking, burnout, identity, and the pressure to meet other people’s expectations
  • Planning, organization, routines, transitions, and executive functioning challenges
  • Trauma, bullying, rejection, grief, or difficult life changes
  • Parent support, family communication, and understanding behavior through a compassionate lens

Who we help

The Growth Department provides mental health counseling for children, teens, adults, parents, and families. We welcome autistic clients with different communication styles, identities, strengths, and levels of support.

The right therapeutic fit depends on the client’s needs, the therapist’s training, and whether outpatient counseling is an appropriate level of care. Our team can speak with you about your concerns and help determine whether our services are a good fit.

Support for children and teens

Therapy for children and teens may focus on emotional regulation, anxiety, behavioral concerns, school stress, confidence, communication, family relationships, transitions, and coping with overwhelming situations.

Support for autistic adults

Autistic adults may seek therapy for anxiety, depression, burnout, masking, relationships, identity, work stress, executive functioning, trauma, or the challenges of navigating environments that do not always understand neurodivergent needs.

Support for parents and families

Parents and family members can receive guidance focused on communication, emotional connection, predictable routines, collaborative problem-solving, advocacy, and responding to behavior with greater understanding.

Services we do not provide

The Growth Department does not provide Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, or formal autism diagnostic testing.

When another type of service or evaluation is needed, we can discuss referral options and help families understand possible next steps. Referral availability depends on community resources and each provider’s eligibility requirements.

What to expect from the first appointment

The first appointment gives the client, parent, or family an opportunity to discuss current concerns, strengths, goals, communication preferences, sensory needs, previous services, and what would make therapy feel safer and more useful.

We do not expect every client to communicate in the same way. Clients and families are encouraged to share accommodations, preferences, and concerns before or during the appointment.

When services are appropriate, the therapist and client will work together to develop a treatment plan based on meaningful and realistic goals.

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide autism diagnostic evaluations?

No. We provide autism-informed mental health counseling, but we do not perform formal autism diagnostic evaluations. We can discuss referral options when a client or family is interested in pursuing an evaluation.

Do you provide ABA therapy?

No. We do not provide Applied Behavior Analysis therapy. Our services focus on mental health, emotional well-being, relationships, coping skills, family support, and practical goals identified collaboratively with the client.

Can someone receive therapy without a formal autism diagnosis?

A formal autism diagnosis is not always required to receive counseling for concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, relationships, trauma, or executive functioning. Eligibility may depend on the requested service, clinical needs, and insurance requirements.

Do you offer therapy for autistic adults?

Yes. Provider availability and clinical fit may vary, but our team works with adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, burnout, identity, masking, relationships, trauma, life transitions, and daily functioning.

Can parents receive support even if their child is not in therapy?

Depending on the family’s needs and the clinician’s assessment, parent-focused counseling or caregiver support may be available. Call our office so we can better understand what kind of help you are seeking.

Do you serve clients outside Oklahoma City?

Yes. In-person appointments are available at our Oklahoma City office. Telehealth may be available to eligible clients located anywhere in Oklahoma, depending on clinical appropriateness, insurance requirements, and provider availability.

Does insurance cover autism-informed counseling?

Coverage depends on the client’s insurance plan, diagnosis, benefits, medical-necessity requirements, and provider network. Our office can help verify benefits, but verification does not guarantee payment by the insurance company.
