What You Will Actually Pay
This is the question most people are really asking. Here is the honest version.
- Children and youth through age 20 have no copays for SoonerCare-covered services. If therapy is for your child, expect to pay nothing.
- Most adults pay nothing or a small copay. SoonerCare copays for outpatient behavioral health are low, and several groups are exempt from cost sharing entirely.
- Copays are capped monthly. If you do owe copays, your total out of pocket for the month is limited to a percentage of your household monthly income.
- There is no monthly premium for SoonerCare or SoonerSelect coverage if you meet the income guidelines.
- A provider cannot refuse to see you because you cannot pay a copay at the time of service.

SoonerCare vs. SoonerSelect: Which One Do You Have?
Oklahoma moved most Medicaid members into managed care plans under a program called SoonerSelect. If you are on SoonerSelect, a health plan administers your benefits instead of the state paying providers directly. Your behavioral health coverage does not shrink. The plans are required to cover at least what SoonerCare already covered.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma

Ambetter is Oklahoma's marketplace plan through Celtic Insurance Company. Behavioral health services are covered, and most Ambetter plans use a flat copay per therapy visit rather than sending it to your deductible, which usually makes weekly therapy predictable to budget for. Do You Need a Referral to Start Therapy?
In most cases, no. You can contact an outpatient behavioral health provider directly and schedule an intake. You do not need your primary care doctor to send you first.
Two situations where it is worth checking: some plans require prior authorization for certain services beyond routine outpatient therapy, and psychological testing or higher levels of care often need authorization. Does SoonerCare Cover Online Therapy?
Yes. Telehealth behavioral health services are covered, which matters if you are outside the Oklahoma City metro, do not drive, work hours that make a daytime appointment hard, or do not want to arrange childcare for a session. Our commercial carriers cover telehealth behavioral health as well.

About Our Clinicians
Our clinical team includes licensed professional counselors and LPC supervisors, counselors practicing under supervision, and advanced practice registered nurses who handle psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Behavioral health case managers work alongside them to help families with paperwork, referrals, and coordination between school, insurance, and care.
Every clinician who sees clients is either independently licensed in Oklahoma or practicing under the supervision of a licensed supervisor, as state law requires. Our team trained at Oklahoma institutions including the University of Oklahoma, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

How long do I have to wait for an appointment?

Can I be turned away if I cannot pay my copay that day?
No. Under SoonerCare rules a provider cannot deny services because a member is unable to pay a copay at the time of service. Unpaid copay balances can still be billed later, so talk to us if cost is a concern.
